Pregnancy, a time for rejoicing about the creation of new life and being complimented on your radiant glow right? Sadly, this is not the case if you find yourself navigating the physical toll of morning sickness, fatigue or musculoskeletal discomfort.
Unfortunately, many women experience these physical disruptions throughout their pregnancy. And when these discomforts escalate, they can put a significant strain on your work, family and daily life.
The wonderful news is, however, that traditional acupuncture is not only a safe treatment during pregnancy, but it can also offer a deeply supportive and relaxing space for women navigating these physiological changes throughout every trimester. Here's a handy guide on how acupuncture and holistic self-care can support your wellness journey.
How Can Acupuncture Support Your Pregnancy Journey?
The great thing about traditional acupuncture is that it takes a truly systemic, holistic view of your body. Rather than treating a symptom in isolation, it focuses on restoring your overall balance, helping to soothe physical discomfort, calm the nervous system, and encourage a sense of vitality.
Modern clinical insights suggest that acupuncture works gently by stimulating the nervous system, encouraging the body to release natural biochemicals that promote deep relaxation, regulate digestive function, and down-regulate pain signals.
A bespoke treatment plan is carefully tailored to you based on your specific trimester, your unique constitution, and your current lifestyle pressures.
Acupuncture offers gentle, non-invasive support for a wide range of pregnancy-related discomforts, including:
Nausea, early pregnancy sickness, and heartburn
Digestive changes and sluggish transit
Fatigue, physical exhaustion, and disrupted sleep patterns
Musculoskeletal discomfort: Upper and lower back pain, rib tension, pelvic girdle discomfort, and sciatica
Encouraging optimal foetal positioning (using traditional moxibustion protocols from week 34 onwards)
Pre-birth and labour preparation (supporting the body’s natural readiness for birth)
“CASE STUDY - FELICIA’S STORY
Felicia* came to see me in the latter stage of her third trimester experiencing rib tension, persistent heartburn, and a highly uncomfortable, inflamed skin rash across her chest and upper abdomen, which was causing significant itching.
In Chinese Medicine, an itchy, inflamed rash is often viewed as a manifestation of ‘heat’ in the body. I selected specific acupuncture points aimed at clearing this internal heat, while gently relaxing the musculature around her ribcage and upper abdomen to help soothe the physical pressure on her stomach. Alongside her clinical sessions, I provided Felicia with simple dietary adjustments and home self-care techniques to practice between appointments.
By her next visit, Felicia reported a very welcome reduction in the intensity of her skin itching and a noticeable easing of her heartburn. Over a course of four weekly treatments, her physical discomfort steadily resolved, allowing her to enjoy a far more comfortable, grounded, and restful final few weeks of her pregnancy.”
Holistic self-care: A FEW simple WAYS TO HELP YOURSELF
navigating morning sickness & nausea - many people find gentle comfort from sipping sliced ginger or peppermint tea, drinking sparkling water, snacking on small meals throughout the day. Inhaling pure lemon or peppermint oil and reducing stress with breathing techniques are also wonderful tools. Additionally, using 'sea-bands' on the inner wrists (Pc6 acupressure point) is an excellent way to self-manage daily waves of nausea.
soothing puffy ankles and swelling - keep up with gentle, regular movement (such as frequent, slow ankle rotations). Whenever you are resting, elevate your feet above your hips, ensure you are drinking plenty of fresh water, and try to minimise very cold, raw foods, which can slow down systemic fluid circulation in traditional Chinese dietary theory.
managing sinus congestion - in traditional Chinese medicine, diet plays a huge role in sinus health. If you are feeling heavily congested, try temporarily reducing ‘damp-forming’ foods such as heavy dairy, rich or fried foods, and highly concentrated fruit juices. Instead, introduce poached pears, warm peppermint tea, or a twist of grapefruit peel in hot water to help clear phlegm naturally. (Top tip: to ensure you maintain excellent calcium levels if you choose to reduce dairy, focus on nutrient-dense foods like steamed broccoli, leafy greens, almonds, wild salmon, tahini, and slow-cooked bone broths)
acupressure for labour support - the work of renowned acupuncturist and researcher Debra Betts offers a fantastic, user-friendly framework for using acupressure points during childbirth. These points can be safely used by your birth partner to help alleviate pain, encourage deep relaxation, and support the body’s natural birthing rhythms. Click here to explore her resources.
“CASE STUDY - LIZZIE’S STORY
Lizzie* sought support during her third trimester due to pelvic girdle discomfort, hip pain, and heightened feelings of anxiety about her upcoming labour. The physical discomfort was making walking difficult, and significantly disrupting her sleep.
Our sessions focused on two clear goals: calming her nervous system to reduce stress and anxiety, and using gentle local needling to ease the muscular tension around her pelvis and lower back. At the end of her very first session, Lizzie noticed an immediate loosening of the tension around her hips as she stepped off the couch.
Over subsequent weekly treatments, her physical mobility steadily improved allowing her to walk to her appointments comfortably and resume her daily light activities. With her physical pain under control, her sleep quality improved, and her overall outlook shifted into a much more relaxed, confident, and peaceful state as she approached her due date.”
